Integrated IT Structure: ERP Systems

The operative database is the key database for the day-to-day business routines
within a company’s integrated system, such as processes from Finance, Marketing,
Logistics or HR. The statistical database is mostly used for stochastic measures and
data mining procedures relevant for controlling, market research and marketing
planning efforts. It has no operative function, as it only derives its content via data
snippets periodically. Snippets are small segments from a great load of data, which
are in most cases based on historic data. Depending on the individual needs of a
certain company, specific modules can be customized and extended (Abts &
Mülder, 2008, pp. 163-166). An ERP system usually works within the boundaries of
one company, but may also be interconnected with other resource planning
infrastructures using a WAN connection. A WAN (wide area network) connection is
normally established via a firewall, which acts as a protective gateway. This enables
a secure working environment.
